Survey Says Few Want Boss' Job
Insider Info - The stories behind the stories

Lofty price for a domain name

It might seem like a lot to spend on a Web site name, but Shuki Haiminis already believes he's recouped the value of the $100,000 he spent on lofts.com three years ago with his brother Yoni. They have launched a new Web site with that name that lists all loft-style condos for sale and lofts for rent in Eastern Massachusetts. The Web site is based in Boston, but Yoni just moved to New York with plans to pursue a similar database there, and Shuki wants to eventually expand to other cities. Shuki says he has already received several offers for that domain name, and believes he could easily sell it for a profit, but he would prefer to hold onto it and see just what it can do for his fledgling venture.

'Extreme' brew is in demand

The brewers at The Boston Beer Co. know a thing or two about "extreme beers," but the Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner arriving in stores now brings new meaning to the term. Brewer Grant Wood says the South Boston-based company has not brewed another beer with such a high concentration of hops, which can contribute to a beer's bitter taste. The company's Boston Lager, for example, uses about one pound of hops per barrel, while the Imperial Pilsner uses 12 pounds per barrel. The limited release flavor returned to the market due to the popular response to its debut a year ago, and it may come back again at some point in the future. "If I was a betting man," Wood says, "I would say we would see it again."

Being the boss isn't all that it's cracked up to be. That's the finding of a recent survey by Menlo Park, Calif.-based staffing service OfficeTeam. More than three-quarters of respondents said they have no desire to take their boss' job, and 60 percent said they couldn't do a better job than their boss. The survey was based upon phone interviews with 602 office workers.

"Employees who observe their boss often don't envy the budgeting and personnel decisions he or she has to make, particularly in a challenging economy, and they may conclude the job isn't for them," said Dave Willmer, executive director of OfficeTeam.
